Photo-Scripts, by João Miguel Barros

Date: 21/2/2018 – 3/6/2018
Location: Museu Coleção Berardo, Portugal

On 21 February, Museu Coleção Berardo opened the exhibition Photo-Scripts, by João Miguel Barros, which presents a selection of fourteen independent short stories on topics ranging from landscapes to portraits. Photo-Scripts proposes to take us on a journey of emotions, from the great pleasure of strolling along a beach at sunrise, speaking our secrets out loud, the fear of losing ourselves and not finding the only path we know, or even the challenge of crossing a bottomless abyss, discovering in each photograph a new story, in an exercise of slow contemplation. Contemplation that can record every detail of the complexity of things, that through meticulous observation and sensitive or intellectual engagement, enables the photographs to restore and arouse emotions and memories.

In the words of João Miguel Barros: “Photo-Scriptscomprises fourteen short stories, all independent from each other, and can be read like a book of short stories. They are fourteen exercises based on a certain roaming of our gaze, but also of our writing fictionalised from reality, seeking meaning in moments that could easily go unnoticed. Photo-Scripts is an exhibition of loose ends, based on narratives that are more or less consistent, but capable of showing a world of small complexities. It is part of a pre-conceived itinerary, intended to reveal simple stories from almost nothing, at times just a little something, following a logic that contradicts the clichéd idea that only decisive moments are worthy of being retold. Photo-Scripts, 2018, is essentially the start of an ambitious project intended to give visibility to some of the multiple invisibilities and insignificances that constantly rush before our eyes.”
